DEKALB COUNTY, IN – A driver who was reportedly drunk and swerving over the lanes caused heavy traffic to backup on I-69 Saturday afternoon.

The incident on I-69, resulted in a standoff. Reports indicate that around 1:15 PM, authorities responded to I-69 southbound near the 322 mile marker on reports of an intoxicated driver.

The 911 caller described a SUV that was “failing to maintain the lane of travel” and the SUV then pulled over on the outside shoulder, just north of the Allen/DeKalb County line.

Law enforcement officers at the scene said they tried to speak with the driver, but he refused to roll down his window and refused to get out of his vehicle. According to authorities a brief standoff took place, but officers safely broke the driver’s windows to remove him from the SUV.

No one was injured.

By 3 p.m., the flow of traffic was back to normal and the scene was cleared.
