Fire Protection Territory For Fremont and Orland Area Residents Discussed
By: Sheila McCrea - Friday, February 12, 2021

STEUBEN COUNTY, IN - A proposed fire protection territory, which would include the towns of Fremont and Orland, as well as four townships in Steuben County was the topic of discussion Thursday night in Fremont.

A joint meeting and the first of three public hearings on the matter took place at the Fremont Fire Station. The meeting stems from discussions centered around some people who believe there is a need for additional funding for fire protection. Proponents of the move think the communities could work together to spread out the burden of cost so the impact to taxpayers could be minimized. Some concerning opposition are questioning the anticipated tax increase for property owners for residents in the town of Fremont and Orland, as well adjacent rural residents within the township areas.

The rural portion of Millgrove Township, located in Steuben County’s northwest corner, would potentially see the largest property tax increases.
