The talks among the Steuben County Council in regards to the 2021 budget have already begun, and have an interesting dynamic to them as the preliminary talks continued Tuesday morning.
One item up for the council to discuss is a potential change in the salary matrix among over 30 county employees into moving them all into a system that takes more accountability into categories such as base pay, a cost of living adjustment, longevity of the position, grade pay, and rank of position.
With budget talks beginning, Jim Getz from the Stebuen County Council spoke on how the annual budget is always a long process.
Getz said, "We have such a challenge ahead of us. We're driving a bus and no one knows where the bus is going." Getz also reiterated that the budget talks among the council usually begins in January of every year.
The council also touched on the challenges that COVID-19 has presented as a whole, citing that the area is "lucky" to be in the position that it is in and that Steuben has not been affected as severely as surrounding counties.
