The Indiana General Assembly adjourned last night. In a final day blitz lawmakers voted to limit surprise medical billing, nullify local ordinance regulating landlord-tenant relations, and make it easier for schools to seek relief from state regulations.
Among the bills that died was one that would require the attorney general
to have a law license. It sought to clarify what would happen if the Supreme Court ends up suspending Attorney General Curtis Hill. But Republicans in the Senate lost their resolve to enter the fray after the House had passed the bill 83-13.
Governor Eric Holcomb said he was grateful for the legislative support of his Next Level agenda.
Senate Democratic Leader Tim Lanane of Anderson offered a different take. He said the Republican supermajority voted more than three times to defeat teacher pay raises. They also dug in on putting Hoosiers in jail for marijuana possession despite it being legal in some form in 33 other states. Republicans voted against capping insulin costs, reasonable workplace accommodations for pregnant workers, providing Epi-Pens at no cost to minors, common sense gun safety measures and expanding voting times for Hoosiers.
