Steuben County’s Coroner has signed official papers to run for the Steuben County Council at large seat.
William “Bill” Harter (R), currently the elected Coroner for Steuben County, a place where he has served for 10 years, filed paperwork last Thursday for a new position with the county. During his service period in the Coroner’s office, he was Deputy Coroner for 2 years, and in the elected position as Coroner for 8 years.
In a social media post, Harter says he “is excited for the opportunity to possibly serve residents in a different capacity”. Harter added that the “last 7 years have been very rewarding serving as the elected Coroner”.
Harter told our news team that he is also excited about the new things coming to the county, such as the judicial center. If elected, Harter says he plans to spend time with each county department to “understand their respective roles in county government”.
Harter has served 35 years with the Angola City Fire Department, and is approaching his 20th year full-time with the AFD. He says he is very “pro-public safety” and “firmly believes” the county EMS “needs to stay local”.
Harter also feels proactive about the county’s new pay matrix, saying it is a “huge step in the right direction”. Harter adds that if he is elected he will have a “responsibility to maintain momentum for retention of good employees”.
Harter will be on the Republican ballot for the Steuben County Council at Large position this spring in May.
Harter is a 1987 graduate of Angola. He and his wife Shari live in rural Pleasant Township.
